Statement On Parish Council Status

December 08th 2025

Tintagel Parish Council currently has no standing Councillors in place and no staff in place.  This means that the Council’s functions are temporarily reduced to a minimum, including the closing of the public toilets and suspension of parking permit processing. Cornwall Association of Local Councils and Cornwall Council are working to assist Tintagel Parish Council to rebuild – this takes the following forms:

New Councillors

  • A byelection will take place for all 11 councillor vacancies on 29th January 2026.
  • Candidates have a window of 22nd December – 2nd January to submit their nomination form.
  • Nomination forms can be obtained from Cornwall Council’s Chy Trevail building in Bodmin, or by requesting from voter.registration@cornwall.gov.uk.
  • A free briefing session for those interested in standing as a councillor will take place on 16th December online: see this link

Temporary Council

  • Four independent people will be appointed by Cornwall Council to hold the temporary office of councillor until 29th January. These independent people have not sat on the council previously and do not seek to do so at the byelection.
  • The temporary Council will meet to pass resolutions on important administrative items, which includes authorisation to advertise the recruitment of a new Clerk (but not to appoint – this will be a function of the new council after the byelection) and to make payments to clear outstanding invoices. They will not discuss matters relating to council policy or strategy; it is a temporary administrative function only.
  • Cornwall Association of Local Councils will provide admin support for the temporary Council and initially for the new Council after 29th January.

New staff

  • Advertising the role for a Clerk will begin as soon as the temporary Council authorises this. The appointment process will be undertaken by the newly elected council after the byelection.
  • The organisation structure, and subsequent recruiting of additional staff, will be a matter for the new Council and new Clerk to work through in the future.
  • Decisions and actions on Council functions, policy and strategy will follow once new councillors and a new Clerk are both in place. This is likely to be around March-April 2026.

Thank you for your understanding whilst the Council rebuilds.
